ER Services to Consolidate at Bluebonnet Campus

Baton Rouge, La. – Baton Rouge General Medical Center’s Mid City Emergency Room will close tomorrow, March 31 at 7:00 am with emergency services consolidating to the Bluebonnet Campus. Since the Mid City ER closure was announced on February 3, frontline staff, physicians, leaders and expert teams from Baton Rouge General have been proactively planning to ensure an effective transition including activating a robust community outreach and education plan and establishing innovative operational changes to improve the flow of patient care and admissions.

Community Outreach/Education
It is critical that the community understands that at 7:00 am on March 31, Mid City will no longer provide emergency services. If you or a loved one needs emergency care, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Baton Rouge General’s efforts in recent weeks to educate the community about this change have included:

  • 60,000 postcards mailed to Mid City residents
  • 40,000 deliveries of informational materials to multi-family housing, neighborhoods and surrounding businesses
  • 300+ informational care packages delivered to area churches, physician offices, businesses, neighborhood associations and schools
  • More than 40,000 automated phone messages to area residents
  • 4,500 letters and digital messages have reached church leaders, non-profit organizations, healthcare providers, schools, businesses and stakeholders in the Mid City community
  • 7,000 informational flyers and pocket cards have been disseminated to patients, families and visitors throughout the hospital campus and physician offices
  • Public service announcements have been placed on radio stations and will continue to run through next week
  • Established patient information channels:
System Preparedness
  • Added 2 new Patient Care Units, 64 new patient care beds at Bluebonnet
  • Actively recruiting for nursing and clinical positions
  • Launched Lean Six Sigma process redesign of system-wide operations,
    • Turnaround and ready patient rooms more quickly and efficiently after discharge
    • Reduce patients’ wait times
    • Continuously decompress as capacity ebbs and flows and both campuses
    • Improved speed of registration process, with new palm-scanning technology
  • Launched new clinical visibility technology for improving flow of patient care, including intercampus support for specialized services provided at Mid City
  • Improving Direct Admissions processes to allow physicians and area nursing homes to directly admit patients to BRG’s campuses, bypassing the emergency room when clinically appropriate
