Baton Rouge General Celebrates Its 400+ Volunteers

Hospital hosts week of appreciation, annual event for national volunteer week

Baton Rouge, La. – National Volunteer Week is April 11-15, and to recognize the more than 400 volunteers who selflessly share their time and energy to support Baton Rouge General’s patients, families and community, the hospital is hosting a week of volunteer appreciation events.

Last year, hospital volunteers generously provided more than 30,000 service hours in nearly 20 departments across the hospital’s Mid City and Bluebonnet campuses, including the surgery waiting room, gift shop, information desks, outpatient infusion, inpatient and pediatric rehab.

“We at Baton Rouge General are blessed with caring and gracious volunteers, and we’re excited to find more ways to thank them,” says Symil LeDoux, Director of Community Engagement. “Our student and adult volunteers support the BRG mission and values in every way.”

On average each year, 181 adults, 150 college students, and 150 high school students volunteer at BRG. In the last fiscal year, the Volunteer Auxiliary donated more than $200,000 back to Baton Rouge General through fundraising and profits from the Gift Shop.

Throughout the week, volunteers will have opportunities to win giveaways, participate in Arts in Medicine activities, and attend a special luncheon where volunteers will be recognized.

“I started out in the Gift Shop, but wanted to be with patients and people so moved over to the Surgery Waiting Room. I don’t answer any medical questions, but help people who may be confused about what to do and where to go,” says 10-year volunteer and BRG Volunteer Auxiliary President Deborah Reeves. “My husband was in the hospital for 9 weeks with a brain tumor, so I understand how far it goes to have pleasant support during this time. I encourage anyone looking for volunteer opportunities to check out Baton Rouge General and its true Community of Caring.”
