BRG's Life's A Canvas Event Promotes Mental Health Awareness

HGTV home renovation expert Holly Baker offers remodeling tips for flood survivors

Baton Rouge, La. – Physicians and community members joined Baton Rouge General and HGTV home renovation expert Holly Baker October 20 for Life’s a Canvas: home edition – a special event following the Baton Rouge area’s historic flooding to promote physical, mental and behavioral health awareness.

Participants enjoyed a do-it-yourself project with instruction from Holly Baker and music from local band Café Au Lait. The unique, interactive event allowed nearly 300 attendees to learn from health experts about how to stay well both physically and mentally while also gathering professional remodeling tips.

"We are Baton Rouge strong, but it's important to remember that asking for professional help is not a sign of weakness,” said Dr. Kenny Cole, BRG Chief Clinical Transformation Officer and Life’s a Canvas panelist.

Flood survivor Deanda Thymes of Baton Rouge won a free kitchen design consultation from Holly Baker, complete with a layout, color palette suggestions and a shopping list of affordable items to go into her new space.

Holly Baker’s remodeling tips for the audience included starting with a “wow” factor in a room and working from there, and focusing more on what residents want the ambiance of a room to achieve than a particular theme.
