Baton Rouge General names Edgardo Tenreiro CEO

Today, Baton Rouge General/General Health System’s Board of Trustees announced Edgardo Tenreiro as its Chief Executive Officer. The 53-year old executive has been serving as acting CEO since August, and has served as BRG’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for eight years.

“The Board was seeking a CEO who believes in the mission of Baton Rouge General and who has the passion and focus to lead us into the future,” said GHS/BRG Board Chair Joseph Juban. “We didn’t have to look far to find the right person. Edgardo’s enthusiasm, strategic focus, and patient-centered leadership inspires those around him to perform at the highest levels. We have a bright future with Edgardo at the helm.”

Tenreiro earned a Bachelor of Arts in Politics, Philosophy and Economics as well as a Master of Business Administration in Finance from the University of Notre Dame. For almost three decades he has served in management roles for hospital systems in Florida, Texas, Illinois and Louisiana including Chief Operating Officer, Chief Executive Officer and Vice President of cardiology, oncology, surgery services, revenue cycle, outpatient clinics, operations, physician network development, marketing, and quality. Since joining BRG in 2008, he has overseen many of the hospital's major functions including physician relations, clinical quality, patient satisfaction, employee engagement and financial performance.

“Edgardo is a natural collaborator with a passion for patient care,” said Perry Franklin, President of Franklin Associates and member of the BRG Board of Trustees. “As I spoke to team members, community leaders and physicians, it was obvious that Edgardo was the right person to lead BRG.”

“I am so proud of the BRG team and I am extremely optimistic about our future,” said Tenreiro. “We have an incredible team of engaged physicians, nurses, clinicians, support caregivers and leaders, and a culture centered around patient safety and quality improvement. I couldn’t be more excited to lead this team as we focus on our mission to improve the health of the people we serve.”

Tenreiro was born in Indiana, and moved to Louisiana in 2008 to work at Baton Rouge General. He has four children and has been married to Kelly Joan Tenreiro for 12 years.
