Baton Rouge General’s Regional Burn Center Outpatient Renovation Complete

17-Apr-2013 Baton Rouge, La. - Renovations were recently completed for the outpatient care area of Baton Rouge General's Regional Burn Center, the only comprehensive adult and pediatric burn center in a 300-mile radius. The project completed the second of a three-phased total renovation of the center. The redesign included a renovation of outpatient treatment rooms dedicated to the removal of tissue and application of burn dressings, a special procedure room, a rehabilitation gym, designated overnight room for patient families, family consultation room, and nurse's station. In addition, all treatment rooms feature enhanced lighting, tiled walls and specialized equipment for wound care.

"The renovation of the Burn Center's Outpatient Unit allows us to continue providing complex burn treatment and extraordinary care to burn victims in the Gulf Coast region," said Ernest Mencer, MD, Medical Director for Baton Rouge General's Regional Burn Center. "This project was just a dream two years ago, and now because of the generosity from our community, it is a reality. Baton Rouge General's patients and staff are grateful to all who have made this project possible and look forward to completing the vision for our burn center."

The $500,000 project was generously funded by: Albemarle Foundation; Baton Rouge General Visionary Partner Society; Capital One Bank; Dow American Styrogenics, Inc.; Imo N. Brown Memorial Fund; Irene W. and C.B. Pennington Foundation; Raymond Gettier Estate; Betty and Gene Van Norman; Walter H.D. Killough Charitable Trust; and William Edwin Montan Charitable Trust. Support also came from funds raised by the Foundation's 2010 and 2011 Excellence In General galas.

Baton Rouge General's Burn Center Inpatient Unit was last renovated 27 years ago. By completing the first two phases of the renovation project which included a special waiting area for families and the outpatient care area, the center is looking ahead to complete the vision for the center with Phase 3, a renovation of the Inpatient Treatment Facility. This project will create a state-of-the-art inpatient unit, allowing treatment in each patient room and creating a seamless transition for patients from treatment to rehabilitation.

Established in 1970, Baton Rouge General's Regional Burn Center was Louisiana's first designated burn facility and first in the state to provide revolutionary skin grafting technology for burn treatment. With the completion of the renovated outpatient area, the Burn Center continues to be at the forefront of burn care advancements with the latest in outpatient burn treatments and services including CO2 laser scar revision, and occupational and physical therapy. Serving a vital need for patients in the Greater Baton Rouge community and the entire Gulf Coast region, the Burn Center also plays an important role in medical education - providing medical students, residents and ancillary staff trainees valuable clinical training in critical care, burn treatment and rehabilitation.

Annually, the General's Regional Burn Center on the Mid City campus treats more than 90% of all inpatient burns in the Metro region and has treated patients from more than 150 zip codes across the Gulf Coast region over the past three years. The Regional Burn Center's vital services also have international reach, most recently, providing critical care for burn patients, native to the Philippines, who were injured in the November 2012 oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. Additionally, Baton Rouge General has dedicated staff at its Bluebonnet campus for pediatric burn patients in the 8-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
