    Battling Back
    A brave 10-year-old boy calmly described pouring gasoline on a trash fire and the excruciating pain of the next three weeks.

    "I want to tell about this," said Nicholas Whalen, "so people who hear about it won't do what I did."

    Nicholas' parents, Tim and Suzanne Whalen of Prairieville, had warned their younger sons about gasoline and fire.

    "The (trash) fire in the backyard was going out," Nicholas said. "So, I poured gasoline on it."

    A next door neighbor heard the explosion and ran over. The neighbor works at Baton Rouge General Medical Center Mid City and suggested that Nicholas be taken to the General's burn unit on Florida Boulevard.
