Volunteers at Baton Rouge General are committed to supporting patients and families through compassionate service and care. From offering a warm smile and cheerful “hello” to visitors, to helping someone find the perfect gift for a loved one, to rocking a newborn baby in our NICU, our volunteers are dedicated to service excellence. Our volunteers are an essential part of our Community of Caring, impacting so many of the General's patients, visitors, friends, doctors, nurses and staff. They provide the little extras that help to create that special experience people have come to know and love at the General.

For more than 100 years, people have been giving generously of their time and talents to serve as the foundation of our hospital. A group of volunteers called the "Blue Birds" served the hospital from 1927 - 1949 by holding annual charity carnivals and Linen Showers, where women in the community were invited to tea and asked to bring a bed sheet for use at the hospital. This event became an annual tradition and was later taken over as a major project by the hospital's volunteer auxiliary.

In 1953 hospital administration formed Baton Rouge General’s Volunteer Auxiliary Organization. Since then, these men and women have worked in nearly every department of the hospital and raised thousands of dollars for new equipment and expanded facilities. Today, more than 60 years later, our volunteer base includes more than 300 dedicated volunteers who contribute approximately 42,000 hours of service to the hospital each year.
