Family Health Center

Real life, Real learning

Because learning to become an ambulatory care expert is a priority, Baton Rouge General has provided a perfect "learning laboratory" for residents. The Family Health Center is where residents learn by being family physicians.

Located one block from our Mid City hospital location, the Family Health Center is a 21,000 square foot, full-service facility designed to support the Family Medicine Residency Program. Patients come from the Baton Rouge community and surrounding areas. All ages, socioeconomic groups and disease processes are well-represented.

Family Health Center features:
  • One block from the General's Mid City location
  • 21,000 square feet
  • 22 exam rooms
  • Procedure room
  • In-office lab
  • X-ray department
  • Patient education and counseling rooms
  • Ample classroom and meeting space
  • Full-service library
  • Large Resident Center
Faculty is always present and available with the residents as they treat patients. Residents spend increasing time at the Family Health Center over the course of the program:
  • First Year: two half-days each week
  • Second Year: three to four half-days each week
  • Third Year: four to five half-days each week
From the patient's perspective, the Family Health Center functions like a private group practice where individuals and families receive comprehensive healthcare. Administratively, the Family Health Center functions exactly as a private practice would - with a professional management staff supported by sophisticated technology that work together to facilitate continuity of care.
