Baton Rouge General Transforms Mid City Parking Lot into Park for a Day

Park(ing) Day offers activities for kids and adults in Mid City area

Baton Rouge, LA – Spaces reserved for cars will be repurposed for community activities Friday, September 18 at Baton Rouge General’s Mid City campus parking lot. As part of the Mid City Redevelopment Alliance’s Park(ing) Day, the front lot on Florida Blvd will be transformed into a park that includes activities, exercise classes, and snacks for children and adults.

“Baton Rouge General is dedicated to leading and inspiring people to live healthy lives,” said BRG President and CEO Mark Slyter. “By turning a part of our Mid City campus into a park for the day, we’re providing a free, accessible space for families and community members to get together and enjoy fun and healthy activities.”

Baton Rouge General’s Park(ing) Day includes a focus on adult health and fitness from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and shifts gears to kids’ activities after 2 p.m. Events include:
  • 10:30-10:45 Yoga demo
  • 11:00-11:30 Meditation

Whole Foods will offer gardening demonstrations for children and BREC On The Geaux will be supplying fun activities for kids, including hula hoops, balls, basketball goals and much more.

Park(ing) Day began in San Francisco 10 years ago as a way to promote discussion around the need for green spaces in urban areas. Since then, it’s been expanded to cities across the country. In addition to Baton Rouge General’s parking lot transformation, Radio Bar and Aladdin’s Lamp will also convert portions of their parking lots into parks Friday.
