Baton Rouge General/General Health System Announces CEO Transition

Baton Rouge, La.– Baton Rouge General (BRG)/General Health System (GHS) today announced the departure of Mark Slyter as president and CEO of the organization.

“The Board of Trustees appreciates Mark’s contributions over the past three years and wishes him the best in his future endeavors,” said Joe Juban, chair, BRG/GHS board of trustees.

BRG Chief Operating Officer Edgardo Tenreiro will serve as acting CEO while the board prepares for a nationwide search for a permanent chief executive.

“Edgardo has served as a leader within the organization for nearly seven years and provides solid business acumen, exceptional operational expertise and a strong commitment to patient care excellence,” said Juban. “We are grateful for his service and support of our clinicians and staff and consider him well-positioned to lead BRG through this period of transition.”

Over the last decade, BRG has been rated among the top 10% of hospitals in patient care quality and safety and achieved numerous national distinctions for excellence in heart and vascular care, orthopedics, cancer services, neurology, women’s care and senior services. In that time, the hospital has grown jobs by 25%, increased outpatient visits by 87% and achieved top quartile rankings in financial performance among community hospitals nationwide

The hospital’s leadership team is also credited with successfully transforming its Mid City campus and cultivating value-driven alignment and strategic partnership opportunities. Expansion of BRG facilities and services in recent years has enabled the hospital staff to care for twice as many patients, while its inpatient capacity has grown by nearly 30 percent.

“Baton Rouge General has exceptional administrative and clinical teams led by some of the most talented professionals in the industry,” said Tenreiro. “Strong and well-positioned for the future, we remain focused on advancing our mission, continuing our 116-year track record of clinical and operational success, and making a difference in the life of every patient we care for, every day.”
