Vincent-ShawVincent Shaw, Jr., MD, CAQSM, FAAFP

Program Director

Family and Sports Medicine Physician

Dr. Shaw, A native of Opelousas, received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Southern University A&M College and his Medical Degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed his Family Medicine Residency training at the Baton Rouge General Family Medicine Residency Program, and also completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. He has been a faculty member for the Family Medicine Residency Program since 2007 and currently serves as the Program Director for Baton Rouge General’s Family Medicine Residency and Sports Medicine Fellowship Programs. Board Certified in Family Medicine with a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine, Dr. Shaw also serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserve and is a team physician for LSU.

Family Physician

Dr. Desi Valentine earned her medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans, completed her residency training at Baton Rouge General Family Medicine Residency Program and is board certified in Family Medicine. She is also a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians.


Ubaid AbbasiUbaid Abbasi, MD

Family Physician

Dr. Ubaid Abbasi was born in Oghi, Pakistan and moved to the U.S. when he was seven. He was raised in Lake Charles, LA, and attended McNeese State University for undergraduate studies and earned his doctorate degree from Saba University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Baton Rouge General Family Medicine Residency Program where he served as chief resident in 2021.


Matthew-BumgardnerMatthew Bumgardner, MD, CAQSM

Family & Sports Medicine Physician

Dr. Matthew Bumgardner earned his undergraduate degree from Centenary College of Louisiana and his medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport. He completed his residency training at Baton Rouge General’s Family Medicine Program, where he served as chief resident, as well as a fellowship in Baton Rouge General’s Sports Medicine Program. He is also a team physician for Louisiana State University and a member of the American Medical Association, American Medical Society of Sports Medicine, American Academy of Family Physicians, and Louisiana Association of Family Physicians.


Robert SudduthRobert Sudduth, DO

Family Medicine Physician

Robert Sudduth, DO, was born in Athens, GA, and was raised in Gulfport, MS. He attended The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS, where he received his undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences. Robert received both his master’s degree in biomedical science and his doctorate degree from William Carey University in Hattiesburg, MS. He completed his residency at the Baton Rouge General Family Medicine Residency Program. He enjoys working out, fishing, golfing, fantasy football, spending time with family and friends, and most importantly, attending New Orleans Saints football games.


Nathan SugarmanNathan Sugarman, MD

Family Medicine Physician

Nathan Sugarman, MD, grew up in Los Angeles, California. He attended the University of California, Irvine where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology. Nathan received his Doctorate degree from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the Baton Rouge General Family Medicine Residency Program where he served as chief resident. Dr. Sugarman is married and has one child. He enjoys traveling, learning about exotic animals, working on cars, playing video games, and spending time with family.


Oanh TruongOanh Truong, MD

Family Medicine Physician

A native of Baton Rouge and graduate of Baton Rouge Magnet High School, Dr. Truong is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Louisiana Association of Family Physicians, and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.

Dr. Truong earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from Rice University in Houston and a medical degree from LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. She completed her family medicine residency training at Northwestern University’s McGaw Medical Center, where she served as teaching chief and was part of the Global Health Clinical Scholars Program. At the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, she completed a fellowship in faculty development and global health. She also received a masters of public health from the University of Pittsburgh and a diploma in international medicine and public health from the INMED Institute for International Medicine in Kansas City, MO.


James-WaddilJames Waddill, MD, FAAFP

Family Physician

Dr. James Waddill is a native of St. Joseph, LA. He graduated magna cum laude from Louisiana Tech University with a degree in Zoology. He received his doctorate degree from LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport. He completed an internship and residency in Family Medicine at E. A. Conway Memorial Hospital in Monroe, Louisiana, and was appointed Chief Hospital Resident during his final year of residency. He has been board certified in Family Medicine since 1986 and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
