Clinical Rotations

Students enrolled in the Radiologic Technology program are required to rotate through Clinical Education Settings (CES) in all areas of our radiology department in our hospitals and clinics. Clinical rotation allows students to observe and to gain an understanding of all specialty areas of radiology to maximize their clinical progress.

The clinical coordinator will assign clinical rotations on a semester basis. Clinical rotation assignments are provided to students at the beginning of each semester and posted at each CES, as well as emailed to each CES manager or CES Clinical Instructor. Students are not permitted to attend clinic in an area they are not assigned nor allowed to attend clinic beyond their scheduled time. Course assignments, including both clinical and didactic courses, shall not exceed 40 hours per week or 8 hours per day.

Required Clinical Rotation Shifts:

  • Day Shifts - Includes a 45-minute lunch break
    • Monday – Thursday: 7:45 a.m. – 4 p.m.
    • Friday: 7:45 a.m. – Noon
  • Evening Shifts - Includes a 30-minute lunch break
    • Monday – Thursday: 2:30 p.m. – 11 p.m.
    • Friday: 2:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
  • Weekend Shifts (Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays) – Day shift includes a 45-minute lunch break and evening shifts include a 30-minute lunch break
    • 6:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.
    • 2:30 p.m. – 11 p.m.
    • 10:30 p.m. – 7 a.m.

Students must complete a total of eight - 10 weeks of evening rotations during their two-year professional program, with two ER weekend rotations. Weekend and evening rotations are only available at Baton Rouge General Bluebonnet and Lane Regional Medical Center locations and will be assigned during the RADS 320s semester. Students may choose weekend shifts, if available. Surgery rotations are 6/6:30 a.m. – 2:30/3 p.m. to include the RT’s typical preparation for all scheduled 7 a.m. cases.

Once students have completed all the required competencies, they may rotate through an elective specialty area of interest or any of the clinical specialty rotations for an extended period as an internship. The internship rotations are voluntary based on the students’ interest. Students must discuss their preferred rotation with the clinical coordinator to determine if a specialty rotation is available.

For clinical competence and course completion, students are required to attend 85% of scheduled clinical days for the semester to progress, whether excused or unexcused. Clinical absences, if unexcused, will result in clinical time loss and point deductions from the professional responsibility grade requirements. Excused clinical absences will result in loss of clinical time but will not result in loss of point the professional responsibility grade requirements if the proper procedure is followed. Excessive clinical absences may result in a compounding point deduction from professional responsibility, lack of clinical progression and could result in course failure.

Transferring Credit Criteria

Baton Rouge General’s School of Radiologic Technology program is a private, not for profit hospital-based certificate program that is JRCERT accredited and does not carry the institutional accreditation that other private or public institutions may have. Our pre-requisite requirements for admission into our program must be taken at outside institutionally accredited community colleges or universities. Those courses listed with a "C" or better can be used for our program’s admissions requirements. Our professional program courses will not transfer however to other public or private institutions solely as taken within the program. Our program does have an articulation agreement with Northwestern State University for which specific courses have a credit exam or portfolio submission requirement to obtain transferable college credits within a SACS accredited institution. This agreement is in place for students to obtain a degree with Northwestern State University, which is the minimum requirement for obtaining ARRT national certification to practice in medical imaging and required for obtaining state licensure from the LSRTBE. Our program does acknowledge degrees prior to admission or obtaining during program completion that care also recognized by the ARRT. Because our program is not institutionally accredited, transferring completed courses within our program to other institutions may will result in a loss of credits.

For more information about transferring credits criteria, program requirements, transfer credits into our program, degree requirements, NSU articulation, and transfer credit out of our program prior to program completion, please contact our Registrar.

Title IV Funding Requirements

Consistent with revised United States Department of Education (USDE) regulations, the USDE requires that programs that participate in Title IV federal funding must disclose if the programs’ educational requirements meet the states’ professional licensure or certification requirements. JRCERT records identify the radiography program sponsored by Baton Rouge General Medical Center as participating in Title IV federal funding and the JRCERT serves as the program’s gatekeeper. There are two types of disclosure required by the USDE.

General Disclosure requires posting information that includes state by state determination that the program fulfills educational requirements for licensure or certification in that state. The information on the Chart and the program’s website has been verified by the JRCERT and the program as of 1/13/2022.

The requirement for Direct Disclosure communications will be to individual students who are enrolled in or are considering enrolling in a program that will lead to licensure or certification. The Direct Disclosure must indicate whether the student’s chosen program (Baton Rouge General School of Radiologic Technology) does in fact fulfill the educational requirements for state licensure or certification within the student’s state of residence as presented on 1/5/2023. The USDE requires that this disclosure be in writing and may be provided electronically. BRG SORT accomplishes this annually in the student’s acceptance letter acknowledging that as of the date of the acceptance letter the program fulfills the educational requirements for state licensure or certification within the student’s state of residence; the statement posted to the admissions section of the website; in the Program’s Brochure- in print at the office, emailed, or posted to the website; and emailed and printed in letter form to the current students of BRG SORT. Any further questions regarding this should be directed to Jaclyn Verret Peters, BRG SORT Program Director via email jac663@brgeneral.org or in writing mailed to 3616 North Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA 70806.
