Cholesterol: Know the Facts
High cholesterol is a condition in which you have too much cholesterol
in your blood. By itself, the condition usually has no signs or symptoms,
so many people don’t know that their levels are too high. But if
you have high cholesterol, you have a greater risk of heart disease. Why?
Cholesterol, fat, calcium and other substances can form plaque, which
often builds up in the artery walls, limiting the flow of oxygen-rich
blood to the heart. This can lead to blood clots, heart attack and stroke.
Lowering your cholesterol can help you avoid these conditions. Some patients
are able to lower their cholesterol with simple diet changes, while others
may require medication. In any case, you should talk to your physician
about testing that will provide you with details about your total cholesterol,
LDL (bad) cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol and triglycerides.
Genetics also play a role in the risk of heart disease, so be aware of
your family history. If you would like to schedule an appointment with
