Snow + Skin Hazards

Playing in the snow is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many Louisianans, but it’s not without risk. Here’s what to be aware of as you head out to build that snowman:
- Fingers, toes, ear lobes, and the tip of the nose are the areas most susceptible to frostbite. Your body works hard to keep internal organs and your head warm, and sometimes these extremities get left behind.
- Try not to leave any skin exposed if you’re going to be outside for a considerable amount of time, in addition to layering. The National Weather Service has a chart with information on how long and at what temperature and wind speed is too long.
- Expect that your skin may get red in these cold temps, but symptoms of frostbite include a loss of feeling and lack of color. Anyone showing signs of hypothermia or frost bite should seek medical attention immediately.
- Another hazard to your skin with snowy weather is, believe it or not, sun exposure. Snow acts like a mirror, reflecting up to 90% of UV radiation, which can cause sunburn and skin damage. So don’t skip your daily sunscreen just because it’s cold and snowy! Covering as much skin as possible will also help. Cold, dry winter air can further irritate skin, so keep it hydrated with a good moisturizer too.
