What is the Pelvic Floor? 

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles at the bottom of a child's pelvis that supports the bladder and bowel. As children grow, these muscles work together with the brain, nerves and core muscles to help them develop control over when they urinate and have bowel movements. The pelvic floor also helps the bladder and bowels empty completely.

When these muscles are too tight, too weak or not coordinating properly, children may have difficulty with bladder or bowel control. This can lead to symptoms such as constipation, urinary accidents, bedwetting, frequent trips to the bathroom or stool withholding. Pediatric pelvic floor therapy helps children improve the coordination and function of these muscles so they can develop healthy bladder and bowel habits.

What Is Pediatric Pelvic Floor Therapy?

Pediatric pelvic floor therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy that helps children improve the strength, coordination and relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles. Using evidence-based, age-appropriate techniques, our pediatric physical therapists identify the underlying causes of bladder and bowel dysfunction and create a personalized treatment plan for each child.

Therapy focuses on teaching healthy bladder and bowel habits while helping children improve muscle coordination, reduce symptoms and build confidence. Parents and caregivers are actively involved throughout the process, learning strategies they can continue at home to support their child's progress.

Pelvic Floor Muscle Training

Children learn how to properly contract and relax the pelvic floor muscles through fun, age-appropriate exercises and activities that improve bladder and bowel control.

Biofeedback Therapy

Biofeedback uses child-friendly technology to help children see how their pelvic floor muscles are working in real time. This visual feedback helps improve muscle awareness and coordination while reinforcing healthy bladder and bowel habits.

Ultrasound Monitoring

Rehabilitative ultrasound is a non-invasive tool that allows therapists to observe muscle activation and bladder function during therapy sessions. Children can also see how their muscles move, making therapy more interactive and easier to understand.

Education and Home Program

Families receive guidance on toileting routines, hydration, nutrition, bowel and bladder habits, breathing techniques and home exercises to help reinforce progress between therapy sessions.
