5 Common Reasons for Summer ER Visits

5 Common Reasons for Summer ER Visits

The lazy days of summer have been known to leave people in the last place they want to be – the emergency room. Here are a few of the top injuries and ailments we see during summer months, and guess what? They are all avoidable!

Sunburns

  • Always wear sunscreen (with an SPF of 30 or higher). Apply it liberally and often, even on cloudy days.
  • Wear a visor or cap when you’re outdoors for long periods of time and avoid direct sun exposure during the hours of 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. (when the sun is at its hottest).

Dehydration

  • Drink plenty of water every day, especially if you’re going to be out in the sun.
  • Know the signs of dehydration: dizziness, nausea and fatigue.

Water-related injuries

  • Watch children closely at the pool and/or beach and invest in swim lessons for your child.
  • When riding in a boat or participating in water sports (jet skis, water skis), wear a life vest at all times.
  • At the beach, never swim alone. Make sure children always swim with a “buddy.”

Burns from outdoor cooking

  • Never grill in enclosed areas – carbon monoxide can build up.
  • Be sure the fuel line is properly connected to the propane tank and the tank is not overfilled.
  • Do not add lighter fluid to an already lit fire. The flames could flash back into the container causing it to explode.
  • Supervise children closely and keep matches and lighters out of reach.
  • Never dispose of coals in paper, plastic or wooden containers.
  • Douse coals with plenty of water and stir them to ensure the fire is completely out.

Firework Mishaps

  • Carefully read and follow instructions for each type of firework.
  • Always have adult supervision - never let young children handle fireworks.
  • Sparklers should immediately be placed in water after they burn out.
  • Never try to re-light fireworks that don’t work properly the first time.
  • Consider attending public firework displays instead of popping your own.
