PGY2 Emergency Medicine

The PGY2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency focuses on the provision of clinical pharmacy services to Baton Rouge General Medical Center (BRGMC) Emergency Department (ED) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. BRGMC is a 588-bed acute care private teaching hospital system which provides a full range of general and tertiary patient care services. Serving as a Certified Chest Pain Center, Primary Stroke Center, and Regional Burn Center, Baton Rouge General Health System houses 62 ED beds across three locations with approximately 76,000 visits annually. The Emergency Medicine (EM) service is composed of EM attending physicians, physician residents from the LSU Emergency Medicine Residency program, mid-level practitioners, the EM clinical pharmacy specialist, the EM PGY2 pharmacy resident, nurses, respiratory therapists, patient care technicians, medication reconciliation pharmacy technicians, student pharmacists, and nursing students.

In collaboration with the EM service line, the resident's focus will be on direct patient care in the ED in areas such as emergent care, urgent care, critical care, toxicology, and infectious diseases. The resident will serve as a co-preceptor to student pharmacists for the University of Louisiana Monroe, Xavier University of Louisiana, and William Carey University, and have the opportunity to complete a teaching certificate program if not obtained during PGY1 year.

Graduates of the program are empowered to:

  • Fully integrate into the EM interdisciplinary team to appropriately triage and treat acutely ill patients
  • Effectively educate students and other healthcare professionals regarding medication and clinical toxicology
  • Demonstrate leadership for emergency medicine practice through interdisciplinary committee involvement
  • Conduct meaningful research that impacts the practice of emergency medicine

Program History

Baton Rouge General has been a pillar of the Baton Rouge community for over 100 years. Growing to include 3 campuses with over 600 licensed beds, we provide healthcare services across the full spectrum of care. Seeing a need for expanding clinical pharmacy education, Baton Rouge General enrolled its first class of pharmacy residents in 2022. Since that time, clinical pharmacy services have continued to expand and provide for vast opportunities in both inpatient and ambulatory settings preparing the next generation of pharmacy leaders. The success of the PGY1 program has even helped propel the development of the second pharmacy residency program, the PGY2 in Emergency Medicine.

Pharmacy Practice

The resident is required to staff every 3rd weekend (17 weekends per year) and one major company recognized holiday (Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day). This may change based on the needs of the department.

Additional Projects

Formal presentations are open to pharmacy staff, physicians, medical residents, and other members of the healthcare team. The resident will work with a mentor to develop two one-hour long educational sessions on a controversial or relevant disease state topic.

The resident will participate in interactive, case-based opportunities throughout the year and will partner with the preceptor for the current rotation to develop a presentation for the members of the clinical pharmacy team.

Residents will complete at least three major projects for presentation at a Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee meeting, which may include a drug monograph, medication use evaluation (MUE), drug class review, order set creation, or protocol/policy development or update. One of these projects (typically an MUE) will also be presented as a poster at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting. In addition, residents are required to complete a longitudinal research project, which will be presented at a regional residency conference and the Louisiana Society of Health-System Pharmacists (LSHP) Annual Meeting, and prepared in manuscript form suitable for publication.

The resident has the opportunity to complete a teaching and learning certificate program, if not previously completed through their PGY1 training. They may also participate in the current preceptor development program where they will be introduced to topics including developing a teaching philosophy, creating a rotation experience, and other strategies to be an effective preceptor.

PharmAcademic, an ASHP-endorsed online evaluation system, is used for all resident evaluations. Evaluations are done for each individual rotation, research and staffing component of the program. Additionally, quarterly evaluations are held with the program director, coordinator and/or mentor to ensure progress on long term goals.
