Lung Nodule Program
Advanced evaluation and management of lung nodules
Lung Cancer Screening
Lung nodules are common and in most cases, benign. But when something shows up on a scan, it’s natural to have questions. Our Lung Nodule Program at Baton Rouge General Pulmonary Medicine is designed to give you clear answers and a plan you can trust. From early detection through diagnosis and, if needed, treatment, our team provides coordinated care every step of the way. Whether your nodule was found during a routine scan or you’ve been referred for further evaluation, we’re here to help you move forward with confidence.
What is a Lung Nodule?
A lung nodule is a small spot or growth in the lung, often found during imaging like a chest X-ray or CT scan.
Most lung nodules are benign (noncancerous) and may be caused by:
- Past infections
- Inflammation
- Scar tissue
In some cases, a nodule may require closer evaluation to rule out lung cancer or other conditions.
How Lung Nodules Are Found
Most lung nodules are discovered incidentally, meaning they show up during imaging done for another reason.
They may be found during:
- Chest X-rays ordered for cough, illness or injury
- CT scans performed for other medical concerns
- Lung cancer screenings, especially for patients at higher risk
Because nodules often don’t cause symptoms, imaging plays a key role in identifying them early.
How We Test and Evaluate Lung Nodules
Not every lung nodule requires treatment but every nodule deserves the right level of attention. Our team uses a step-by-step approach to determine what your nodule means and what to do next.
-
Detailed imaging review
We carefully evaluate the size, shape and appearance of the nodule using high-resolution CT scans.
-
Risk assessment
We consider your medical history, smoking history and other factors to determine the likelihood of concern.
-
Follow-up imaging
Many nodules are safely monitored over time to check for any changes.
-
Advanced testing or biopsy
If needed, we may recommend additional testing to better understand the nodule.
Lung Cancer Screening
For those who may be at higher risk for developing lung cancer, screening offers a way to detect changes early, often before symptoms appear. Lung cancer screening uses a low-dose CT scan to detect signs of cancer before symptoms appear. It’s recommended for certain individuals, especially those with a history of smoking.
Screening is:
- Quick and non-invasive
- Designed to catch cancer early, when it’s most treatable
- One of the most common ways lung nodules are first detected
If a nodule is found during screening, our program ensures you have a clear, guided path forward.
