Cancer treatment, whether it’s radiation, chemotherapy or surgery, can be challenging. In the past, patients were often told to take it easy and get as much rest as possible --- and this is good advice. But new studies show that light exercise is safe and can improve a cancer patient’s physical function and quality of life.

Your cancer care team will be able to customize an exercise plan for you, based on the treatment you’re receiving, the type and stage of cancer you’ve been diagnosed with, and your stamina, strength and fitness level.

Keep it Simple

  • Talk to your doctor before you start any kind of exercise.
  • Always begin by stretching and flexing.
  • Do simple activities (knee lifts, shoulder shrugs, etc.)
  • Try short periods of activity with frequent breaks (walking, yoga).
  • Exercise with a friend or family member.

Health Benefits

Even a small amount of physical activity will improve your mood, boost your energy, lessen nausea, increase blood flow to your body, and reduce the risk of anxiety and depression. After cancer treatment, you should be able to do more, but for now --- keep it simple, keep it safe, and make it fun.
