BRG Breast Cancer Program Earns Sixth National Accreditation
BATON ROUGE, La. - Baton Rouge General’s (BRG) Breast Cancer Program has earned reaccreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) for the sixth time. BRG was the first hospital in Louisiana to be granted the three-year accreditation by NAPBC in 2009, and was reaccredited in 2012, 2015, 2018, 2022, and now 2025.
Second to skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. And breast cancer is now the leading cause of cancer death in Black women, according to a report by the American Cancer Society. Programs accredited by the NAPBC follow a model that emphasizes multidisciplinary, integrated, and comprehensive breast cancer services, focusing on the spectrum of a patient’s journey with breast cancer, including prevention, screening, treatment, and survivorship.
“About four in 10 hospitals fail in their first attempt at an accreditation, a testament to how rigorous the process is,” said Dr. Everett Bonner, BRG’s Medical Director of Breast Cancer Services. “When it comes to breast care, we have seen year after year how these quality programs translate to better patient care and outcomes.”
BRG is the only hospital in the state with all three key cancer program accreditations from the American College of Surgeons: Commission on Cancer (CoC), NAPBC, and National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC), which the hospital received in 2023. First-time pass rates for NAPRC were substantially lower among hospitals nationally, at just 31%.
BRG provides patients with the best in care throughout their cancer journeys, from diagnosis and state-of-the-art surgical options and treatment to a full spectrum of resources and support. Access to breast cancer screenings is key in prevention and early detection. BRG’s Breast Center is also designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology, a designation it has held since 2017. The hospital’s High-Risk Breast Clinic provides specialized care to women at risk for developing breast disease who are underinsured or uninsured.
