BRG, Councilman Kenney Bringing New Health Clinic to Scotlandville
BATON ROUGE, La. — Baton Rouge General (BRG), in partnership with the Office of Metro Councilman Anthony Kenney, Jr., today announced a new clinic at the Jewel J. Newman Community Center in Scotlandville.
The clinic will provide both primary care and mental health services to families in Scotlandville, North Baton Rouge and surrounding neighborhoods. Set to open in late October, the clinic is designed to make accessing healthcare easier – patients can walk in, schedule online or call to make appointments.
Almost a quarter of Louisiana adults reported not having a primary healthcare provider, a relationship that is key to a person’s overall health, especially those with a chronic condition like high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes. Managing those conditions can keep people out of potentially emergency situations and at a lower risk of other health complications.
Mental health continues to be a major health need in the region. Louisiana has the second highest percentage of adults experiencing frequent mental distress in the country, at just under 20%. Substance use disorders and suicide rates are also on the rise. BRG has continued to expand access to inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services, with the addition of an intensive outpatient program to substance use this year.
BRG has provided care at the Jewel Newman Community Center during bi-weekly stops with its mobile health unit, BRG Care on the Go. Once the clinic opens, the community can access care there five days a week – Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon.
The announcement was made during a press conference on Tuesday morning, with Mayor- President Sid Edwards, local leaders, BRG leadership and community members in attendance.
The Jewel J. Newman Community Center is located at 2013 Central Road B, Baton Rouge.
