GLP-1s and Bone Health: What You Need to Know
GLP-1 weight loss medications have taken the world by storm and for good reasons. These medications help people lose weight, improve blood sugar, and take control of chronic conditions in ways we haven’t seen before. But like most powerful tools they come with a few trade-offs worth understanding, like a potentially higher risk of osteoporosis, a condition where bones become weaker and more likely to break.
New studies suggest that that GLP-1 medications may be linked to a 30% higher risk of developing osteoporosis, especially in people with Type 2 diabetes.
We’ve long known that weight loss, especially rapid weight loss, can lead to bone loss. That’s because your body isn’t just shedding fat. It can also lose lean muscle and bone density along the way. With GLP-1 medications, weight loss can happen quickly. And while that’s often the goal, it may also speed up bone density decline, particularly if you’re not actively protecting your bones through nutrition and exercise.
So, is it the medication or the weight loss? We don’t know for certain yet, but researchers are still working to understand whether these risks are caused by the medications, rapid weight loss or a combination of both. The truth likely sits somewhere in the middle. What we do know is that the benefits of GLP-1 medications often outweigh the risks, but those risks shouldn’t be ignored.
If you’re taking a GLP-1 medication, a few simple steps can go a long way:
• Don’t skip strength training. Weight-bearing exercises (like walking, resistance training, or even bodyweight workouts) help keep bones strong.
• Prioritize calcium and vitamin D. These are your bones’ best friends. Think dairy products, leafy greens, fortified foods, and safe sun exposure or supplements if your provider recommends them.
• Keep protein on your plate. Protein helps maintain muscle mass, which supports bone health and reduces fall risk.
• Talk to your doctor about screening. If you’re at higher risk, a bone density scan may be recommended to get a baseline and monitor changes over time.
GLP-1 medications are powerful and for many people, they’re opening doors to better health that once felt out of reach. But better health isn’t just about the number on the scale. It’s about protecting your whole body. If you’re on a GLP-1 or thinking about starting one, talk with your physician about the risks these medications could have on your bone health, nutrition, and long-term plan to get and stay healthy.
