Not only does hearing loss affect your quality of life as you age, but researchers are discovering just how closely it may be tied to memory and thinking skills. Studies show that people with moderate to severe hearing loss are about 50% more likely to develop dementia than those with normal hearing.

While the connections between dementia and hearing loss are not yet fully understood, experts believe the connection comes down to a few key factors:

  • Social Isolation. When it’s hard to hear, it’s harder to connect. People may step back from social activities, which can speed up cognitive decline.
  • Brain Changes. Even mild hearing loss can lead to changes in the way the brain processes information. These shifts may contribute to changes in memory and thinking.
  • Cognitive Load. If your brain has to work overtime just to understand sounds, it has fewer resources left for other tasks like focusing, problem-solving, and recalling information.

Hearing loss can’t always be prevented, but there are steps you can take now to help protect your hearing and lower your dementia risk.

  • Get regular hearing tests. Early detection means early intervention. It’s recommended that hearing tests be part of regular checkups particularly for those 50 and older. Yearly tests to monitor hearing as you age can help to catch subtle changes before they interfere with daily life.
  • Manage underlying health issues. Conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure can impact hearing.
  • Use hearing aids if recommended.  They don’t just make conversations clearer; they can help keep your brain engaged and your lifestyle active.

Acknowledging hearing loss can be tough, but taking action can keep you connected to the people and activities you love, while protecting your brain health for the long haul.
