Men are confident creatures. Confident they can carry every grocery bag inside in one trip. Confident they can fix that water leak on their own. And apparently, very confident they’re healthier than everyone else, too.

It’s no secret that many men believe they lead healthy lifestyles and don’t need regular preventive check-ups. (Some won't even go to the doctor when something is wrong!) The problem? There’s often a major gap between how healthy men think they are and their actual health status.

A poll revealed a staggering 65% of men believe they are healthier than other men. Statistically speaking, that’s impossible, but it does explain why so many routine check-ups get pushed to the bottom of the to-do list. In fact, 44% of men said they skip yearly physicals, annual screenings, and routine doctor visits altogether, with nearly one-third believing health screenings are unnecessary.

The classic “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” mindset may work for a lawnmower, but it’s not a great strategy for your health. Many serious conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and even certain cancers can quietly develop without obvious symptoms. By the time warning signs appear, the issue may already be more serious and harder to treat.

For many men, avoiding the doctor isn’t about laziness, it’s about discomfort. (And some simply convince themselves that feeling “mostly okay” is good enough.) They may fear hearing bad news or don’t want to feel vulnerable or embarrassed discussing symptoms, weight gain, stress, or mental health struggles.

It's important to note that mental health is health. And this is another area where overconfidence can become dangerous. Men are statistically more likely to ignore emotional or mental health concerns, often believing they should and can “handle it themselves.” In fact, 44% of men report they either haven’t sought or don’t plan to seek help for mental health challenges. Stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout are often brushed off as just being tired, busy, or overwhelmed.

The truth is, taking care of your health is not a sign of weakness. It’s one of the smartest things you can do for yourself and the people who depend on you. Preventive care helps catch issues early, before they become bigger problems. A yearly physical can check blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar levels, and other important markers that may reveal concerns long before symptoms appear.

Think of it this way: most men wouldn’t skip oil changes for their truck or ignore a warning light on the dashboard for months. Your body deserves the same level of attention.

Small steps can make a huge difference:

  • Schedule an annual physical
  • Stay up to date on screenings and vaccinations
  • Talk openly about mental health concerns
  • Exercise regularly and make healthier food choices
  • Get enough sleep and manage stress
  • Stop assuming “fine” means healthy
