Screen-to-Screen Swapping Doesn’t Equal Rest
You finish a work email, close your laptop and pick up your phone to scroll social media. Later, you trade your phone for a TV show before bed. It might feel like a break, but switching from one screen to another doesn’t give your eyes or brain real rest.
Digital eye strain is a real condition. When you stare at screens, your eyes constantly work to focus on nearby objects. You also tend to blink less often, which can lead to dry, irritated eyes, blurred vision and eye strain. Moving from a computer to a phone or tablet keeps those demands going, even if the content is more entertaining or relaxing.
Your brain is still working, too. Whether you’re answering messages, watching videos or scrolling through social media, you’re processing information, responding to stimuli and often switching attention from one thing to another. Even passive screen time can keep your mind engaged, making it harder to mentally unwind. Screen use close to bedtime can also interfere with sleep, particularly when it delays bedtime or exposes you to bright light.
The best option to give your brain and eyes a true break (as hard as it can be) is to step away from technology altogether, followed by some other tips:
• Take screen-free breaks. Get up, stretch, walk outside or chat with your family or a coworker without checking your phone.
• Look away regularly. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps reduce eye strain, though it doesn’t replace a longer screen break.
• Give your eyes a change of scenery. Look out a window, spend time outdoors or focus on objects at different distances.
• Create a screen-free wind-down routine. Put away phones, tablets and laptops before bed. Read a physical book, take a warm shower or listen to calming music instead.
Technology is part of everyday life, and you don’t have to give it up. The goal is to try to break the cycle of constant stimulation. Sometimes, the best way to recharge is to put the screens away and let your mind wander.
