Inpatient Behavioral Health Care During Early Pregnancy

Pregnancy can be a challenging time, especially when you're experiencing a mental health crisis. Baton Rouge General Mid City offers inpatient behavioral health care for select women in their first trimester of pregnancy who need additional support and psychiatric stabilization.

Our program provides a safe, supportive setting for women experiencing acute behavioral health concerns, including suicidal thoughts or an inability to safely care for themselves. Patients receive inpatient psychiatric care from our behavioral health team, with treatment focused on stabilization and helping them move toward the next step in their care.

Program Eligibility and Care Limitations

This program is designed for select women who:
  • Are in their first trimester of pregnancy (up to approximately 13 weeks).
  • Are experiencing an acute mental health crisis that requires inpatient psychiatric care.
  • Meet standard inpatient behavioral health admission criteria.
  • Have completed the required medical evaluation and have been medically cleared for admission.
  • Patients must also have a completed obstetric ultrasound documenting gestational age and fetal viability before admission.

This program is specifically for select patients in their first trimester of pregnancy. Patients in their second or third trimester are not eligible for admission. Because this is an inpatient behavioral health unit, the program does not provide obstetric services, fetal monitoring or labor and delivery care. Patients with active obstetric complications or medical conditions requiring a higher level of care will need evaluation and treatment in an appropriate setting.

How to Access Care

Admission requires a medical evaluation and clearance, including an obstetric ultrasound. Patients may be referred through an emergency department or physician's office. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis during early pregnancy, seek immediate evaluation at an emergency room.
