BRG First in Area to Offer Robotic System for Prostate Health
BATON ROUGE, La. – Baton Rouge General (BRG) today announced an innovative technology that can improve the quality of life for men suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), commonly known as an enlarged prostate, a condition that affects half of men over age 50. BRG is the first in Baton Rouge to offer Aquablation® therapy with the new HYDROS™ Robotic System to treat BPH, providing symptom relief while preserving sexual function and continence.
“Unfortunately as men age, BPH is very common and can really disrupt everyday life, from getting up multiple times a night to planning life around having a bathroom nearby,” said Dr. Wesley Porta, urologist with Premier Urology at Baton Rouge General. “Most men are not willing to sacrifice sexual function to relieve their symptoms, and with this new technology, they don’t have to choose.”
BPH impacts urinary function, making it harder to urinate and fully empty the bladder. As a result, men may feel the need to urinate urgently, more often than normal and frequently at night. Without timely treatment, BPH can lead to severe health issues like permanent bladder or kidney damage, bladder stones and incontinence. The standard treatment option today includes life-long medication and a surgical procedure called TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate), but this has been shown to impact sexual function and other potential medical side effects and interactions.
Aquablation therapy, now delivered by an AI-powered robotic system, uses real-time, ultrasound-guided, robotic-assisted waterjet technology, allowing surgeons to create a personalized treatment plan that precisely targets which prostate tissue to remove and which to preserve. It enables efficient and predictable waterjet resection across a wide range of prostate sizes and shapes.
An Aquablation therapy procedure was performed first in the area at BRG by Dr. Porta. BRG’s Aquablation Therapy Program is the first in Baton Rouge and adds to the hospital’s comprehensive urology services.
