Vacation:

Residents receive four weeks paid vacation each academic year, plus additional continuing education leave as approved by the program in each of the PGY-2 and PGY-3 years. Vacation is allowed in one-week blocks only and may be prescheduled by the program for PGY-1s. Vacation does not accrue if unused.

Health Plan

Comprehensive health coverage for the resident and his/her dependents through the General Health System Health Plan, paid by Baton Rouge General. Optional dental, vision and critical illness plans can be chosen at the resident's expense.

Life Insurance

Term life insurance coverage is provided to the resident in an amount equal to annual base salary, paid by Baton Rouge General. Additional life insurance and disability benefits can be elected.

Professional Liability

Insurance

House staff are covered through General Health System's Professional Liability Plan for all duties performed as a resident, paid by Baton Rouge General.

Professional Fees

The Program pays dues for residents to belong to the American and Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians.

The Board Exam fee will be paid for each third-year resident in good academic standing during the PGY-3 year.

BLS, ACLS, PALS and NALS certification renewals will be provided one time during residency.

USMLE Step 3 examination fee will be paid if registered and scheduled by December 31 of the PGY-1 year.

Additional Benefits

CME Fund

Residents receive an allowance during each year of training to provide support for continuing education meetings, scholarly activities, educational books and/or journals and fees that may be associated to your education. An electronic allowance of $350 is assigned to PGY1 residents to be used during PGY1. Approval criteria will apply to use of all funds by the Program Director – paid by Baton Rouge General. 

Financial Management

Personal retirement savings funds with unique and valuable tax advantages are available through the General Health System Tax Sheltered Annuity program. Regular share savings account by payroll deduction and other savings and loan programs are available at Bayou Federal Credit Union.

Other Discounts

Residents receive discounts on prescriptions and discounts for services, programs and facilities of General Health System.

  • White coats and laundry service are provided - paid by Baton Rouge General.
  • Resident Lounge- The Resident Lounge is available exclusively for our residents.
  • Each resident has their own email address, internet access and other computer resources.
  • Residents are issued a meal ticket while on-call, as well as the opportunity to eat in the Physicians Lounge. Residents will receive a discount at the hospital's cafeteria.
  • Complimentary parking is provided in a secure lot at both the Bluebonnet and Mid City campuses.
