Survive, Don't Drive

ambulance

When it comes to surviving a heart attack, every second counts. That’s why first responders and healthcare workers across the country are encouraging people to “Survive, Don’t Drive.” The national campaign reminds patients that those who call 911 receive treatment an average of 20 minutes faster than those who drive themselves to the hospital.

That 10- or 15-minute trip to the Emergency Room will only delay your medical treatment, which could also cause more damage to your heart. When paramedics are called, they will begin treating you immediately and will relay your condition to the heart team at the hospital.

So be aware of the symptoms of heart attack, and make the right call:

  • Chest pain
  • Discomfort or pain in one or both arms
  • Discomfort or pain in the neck or jaw
  • Abdominal discomfort that feels like heartburn
  • Shortness of breath, nausea or dizziness
  • Sweating
  • Fatigue
