New ‘Boys to Men’ class helps prepare boys for adolescence

BATON ROUGE, La. – Adolescence means a lot of changes for boys, and sometimes just starting the conversation about puberty can be uncomfortable, not to mention how to address all the questions that may come up. Baton Rouge General (BRG) is making it a little easier with a new class called “Boys to Men,” which covers issues like skin and body changes, proper hygiene, and more. The first class is Sunday, August 18 from 2-3:30 p.m.

“Boys to Men” is designed for boys ages 10-13, accompanied by a parent or trusted adult. Led by BRG family medicine physician Dr. Jacob Wood, the class is informal and interactive, allowing boys to work in groups and ask questions in a comfortable environment.

“It’s so important to talk to these young boys about the physical and emotional changes of puberty before they start happening,” said Dr. Wood. “Knowing what to expect helps them develop a healthy confidence about becoming a young man. For some parents, it’s an uncomfortable topic, but we’re happy to help start the conversation.”

The class will be held every other month on BRG’s Bluebonnet campus. The cost is $10, and registration is required. Attendees will receive a toiletry bag filled with a starter shaving kit and essential hygiene items. “Boys to Men” joins BRG’s popular Girl Talk series, which is for girls ages 9-11.
