BATON ROUGE, La. – Emma and Grayson are the most popular baby names of 2020 at Baton Rouge General.

In true 2020 fashion, there were some surprises with the top girl names. None of this year’s top names even ranked in 2019 (Brooklyn topped the list). Also, newcomer Serenity may be a nod to the times, as research shows “virtue” names like Faith and Hope have become more popular options during the pandemic. Emma made a strong showing not only at BRG but across the board, ranking #4 both nationally and statewide. Olivia ranked first in Louisiana and second in the U.S.

As with BRG’s girl names, the boys’ list mixed things up for 2020. None of the names were on last year’s list, although Grayson was a top name in 2018 and is ranked #6 in the U.S. While James typically ranks high on state and national lists, it’s new to BRG’s top 5. And, Wyatt and Josiah are trending upward both in Louisiana and nationally.

BRG’s top five girl and boy names of 2020 are:

Girl

  1. Emma
  2. Olivia
  3. Charlotte and Scarlett (tie)
  4. Sophia
  5. Serenity

Boy

  1. Grayson
  2. Jacob
  3. James
  4. Wyatt
  5. Josiah

Dr. Candee Moore, chief of OB/GYN services at BRG, says their team expects a busier January than usual for births, in part because of the pandemic.
