Baton Rouge General Recognized as Top Facility for Cardiac Surgery

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Today, Baton Rouge General (BRG) announced top honors for cardiac surgery, making it the only hospital in Louisiana and one of 80 hospitals nationally to receive the Healthgrades Excellence Award. The award recognizes superior clinical outcomes in heart bypass surgery and heart valve surgery.

“We have continued to grow our comprehensive cardiovascular program, working with some of the region’s best cardiologists, cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons,” said Stephen Mumford, chief operating officer at BRG. “For these care teams to be recognized for their tireless work improving their patients’ lives is something we can all be proud of.”

BRG has a long history in cardiovascular care, from performing the city’s first open-heart surgery in 1958 and coronary artery bypass surgery in 1971 to the state’s first robotic heart surgery in 2014. In recent years, BRG has been home to many more “firsts” in Louisiana, using cutting-edge technology in procedures like TCAR (transcarotid artery revascularization), Watchman heart implant, and TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement).

Healthgrades analyzed clinical outcomes data for nearly 4,500 short-term and acute care hospitals across the U.S. Its ratings are different from other types of quality analyses in that they use objective data to evaluate hospitals solely on clinical outcomes. Specifically, Healthgrades rates hospitals based on their performance on risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications for 31 of the most common conditions and procedures.
