BATON ROUGE, La. – To celebrate EMS Week, Baton Rouge General (BRG) will host its annual Jambalaya Cookoff on Saturday, May 22, to honor and thank the area’s first responders. Seven teams will vie for the top prize at the Bluebonnet campus, behind the emergency room. Judging is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. First responders are then welcome to stop by any of BRG’s emergency rooms – Bluebonnet, Mid City or Ascension – for their free jambalaya.

“The EMS community has not only supported our team more than ever this past year, but they have worked tirelessly to care for our community,” said Marsha Bond, RN, director of emergency services at BRG. “Our annual jambalaya cookoff is one small way we can say ‘thank you’.”

Cookoff teams will get some added help this year with donations of sausage from The Jambalaya Shoppe Smokehouse, The Jambalaya Shoppe Prairieville, and The Jambalaya Shoppe Gonzales, chicken from Sanderson Farms, rice from Supreme Rice and onions from Performance Food Group. In addition, both The Jambalaya Shoppe Siegen location and The Jambalaya Shoppe Essen at Ichiban Square location will provide cooked beans to accompany the first responders’ jambalaya meals.

This year’s judges are Gordon, Kernan, The Jambalaya Shoppe Quality Control Manager; Trooper Bryan Lee, Louisiana State Police; Jack Jones, St. George Fire Department; Matt Smyer, Baton Rouge EMS; and William Sand, Baton Rouge General Ambulance Service.

EMS Week, held annually in May, honors the service and dedication of EMS providers.
