Standing out in an interview is a critical part of the hiring process. First impressions are important and can too often outweigh the actual credentials on your resume. Baton Rouge General’s recruiters weigh in on some ways to prepare for your next interview and tips on how to make a lasting impression during the interview process.

Preparing for the Interview

  • Review the job description and duties of the position you’re interviewing for to ensure it’s a good fit.
  • Familiarize yourself with the company and its mission, vision and values.
  • Be flexible with scheduling and be on time. Confirm the interview time and location and ask if there are any specific directions to follow before you arrive.
  • Dress appropriately and neatly for the interview to make a good first impression.

During the Interview

  • Greet the interviewer warmly and make eye contact.
  • Prepare to provide your experience concisely yet briefly and explain how your past experience will apply to the position you are interested in.
  • Prepare thoughtful answers to common interview questions and answer questions as directly as possible, focusing on how your skills and abilities apply to the position.
  • Avoid negative comments about past employment.
  • Prepare questions you may have about the position and ask about the next steps in the hiring process, including correspondence timeframes.
  • Thank the interviewer for the opportunity.

After the Interview
