BATON ROUGE, La. – Bistro Byronz, Mestizo’s, Monjuni’s, and….Baton Rouge General? The culinary team from BRG came away with the Best of Mid City Award at the Taste of Mid City, Baton Rouge’s newest food festival supporting Youth City Lab. The winning dish was BRG’s spin on Southern favorite grillades and grits: vanilla demi-glace braised short ribs over boursin cheese stone ground grits, topped with crispy purple sweet potato strings. The dish was served in a heart shaped bowl to tie in the hospital’s logo.

Taste of Mid City was held Sunday, May 21 and featured dishes from restaurants and chefs in the Mid City area plus live music and activities for the family. Hosted by Franklin Associates, the inaugural event was a way to bring the community together while supporting a good cause. Participating Mid City restaurants and chefs included Bistro Byronz, Calandro’s Supermarket, Canatella Grocery, Culinary Productions, Hub & Spoke, King Tremaine Premium Candies, Liquid Fix, Mid City Beer Garden, Mestizo’s, Mr. C’s Deli, Monjuni’s and Reginelli’s.

BRG’s culinary team has been recognized in the past for its dishes, including Best in Show at the popular Capital Chefs Showcase, which featured over 40 of the community’s finest restaurants, chefs and caterers. That winning dish was crispy braised pork belly, osso bucco served over blackened praline risotto with crawfish mascarpone, and pumpkin tiramisu. Anyone from the public can dine at the hospital’s cafeterias – not just patients. Between the Bluebonnet and Mid City locations, the hospital serves more than 2.5 million meals per year.

Youth City Lab, located on Government Street, is Baton Rouge’s first state-of-the-art youth center, offering programs and resources for local kids. This includes a new Front Yard Bikes shop; a youth mentoring program through Big Buddy; Line4Line, a barbershop-based literacy program; Humanities Amped, a school-based program that promotes healing through the humanities; a performance stage and seating area; commercial kitchen; courtyard and community garden.
