Camp Catahoula FAQ

How much does camp cost and are meals included?

Camp is completely funded by donations with no charge the camper or families. All meals and snacks are provided to campers multiple times throughout the day.

Will transportation be available?

Transportation will be provided via bus to and from camp, pick-up and drop off information will be sent once camper is registered. You can also email burn.camp@brgeneral.org for additional information.

What should my child pack for camp?

  • Seven changes of clothes, t-shirts and shorts (outdoor games/activities)
  • Socks - bring extra
  • Underwear - bring extra
  • Full coverage swimming suit
  • Pajamas
  • Sneakers/water shoes
  • Toiletries - Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, soap, brush/comb, hair products
  • Towels - Please bring two labeled towels and washcloths
  • XL twin bed sheets or sleeping bag
  • Pillow and blanket for the bus ride
  • Medications - Label and and write instructions on each medication. Turn in all medications to camp staff before getting on the bus.

Can clothes be washed if needed?

We can wash your child's clothes, if needed. A laundry bag is optional.

If my child runs out of toiletries, will more be provided?

Additional supplies will be provided, if needed.

Are swim shoes and sunscreen needed?

Swim shoes are recommended, and sunscreen will be provided.

Are there bedtimes at camp?

Each cabin’s lights-out time will vary based on the age of campers.

How can I get in touch with my child during the week?

We ask that cell phones be left at home. However, if your child brings a phone, Camp Catahoula is not responsible for your child’s phone. Phones will be collected each morning and returned to campers at night once they are in their cabins with counselors. Campers will also be allowed to use staff members phones to call home if needed. We will also be constantly posting in the Camp Facebook group (Baton Rouge General Pediatric Burn Camp) during the week of camp, you can message the group at any time.

Is the schedule highly structured, or do kids have a lot of free choice? What is the balance between indoor and outdoor activities?

Camp is structured for daily activities including cooking, meals, games, swimming and crafts along with rest time. Most outdoor activities occur in the morning when it is slightly cooler and water activities and swimming in the afternoon. Rainy day schedules will include indoor games and activities.

What is the staff to camper ratio?

Typically we have two counselors for every four to five campers. There is are a large number of additional staff present to assist as needed and to provide support.

Are kids separated by age?

Campers are assigned to cabins by age as well as for certain activities.

Who can my child talk to if there’s a problem with a counselor or with another camper?

Camp coordinators are always available to discuss any concerns or issues.

Is there a nurse or someone on staff to provide medical attention if needed?

There is a camp nurse and multiple first responders available to campers at all times.
