What is a Vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a safe, permanent form of birth control for men. It works by blocking the small tubes (vas deferens) that carry sperm.

Your body still makes sperm, but they’re naturally absorbed. Nothing changes with testosterone, sex drive, erections, or sensation. The only difference is sperm are no longer part of the semen.

What Happens During the Procedure?

  • The procedure is done in-office and takes about 30 minutes.
  • The area is numbed with local anesthesia.
  • The doctor makes a tiny opening in the skin.
  • The tubes that carry sperm are cut and sealed.
  • You go home the same day.

Why Consider a Vasectomy?

For men and couples who are confident their family is complete, a vasectomy offers a reliable, long-term solution. It is one of the most effective forms of birth control, with over 99% effectiveness after confirmation testing. Unlike temporary methods, it is a one-time procedure that eliminates the need for ongoing planning or prescriptions.

A vasectomy is also less invasive than female sterilization and does not affect testosterone levels, sexual performance, or sensation. For many, it provides a straightforward way to share responsibility in family planning while offering lasting peace of mind.

How it Works

  • Consultation

You’ll meet with one of our board-certified urologists to review your medical history, discuss the procedure, and ask any questions. We’ll make sure you feel confident and informed before moving forward.

  • In-Office Procedure

The vasectomy itself typically takes about 30 minutes. Local anesthesia keeps you comfortable, and you’ll head home shortly after.

  • Quick Recovery

Plan to rest for a couple of days. Ice helps with mild swelling or soreness. Most men return to light activity within a few days, avoiding strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for about a week.

  • Confirmation Testing

A vasectomy does not make you sterile immediately. Sperm can remain in the reproductive tract for several weeks. Most patients provide a semen sample 8–12 weeks after the procedure. Once testing confirms no sperm are present, your doctor will officially clear you.
