Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

With all the goodies and holiday parties this time of year, it can be difficult not to overindulge. In fact, most Americans will gain at least a pound or two during the holidays and most will not lose the extra pounds – leading to significant weight gain year after year. Here are some healthy tips to help control your weight while still enjoying the holidays.

  1. Pace yourself: Eat slowly and serve smaller portions. You don’t have to deprive yourself of your favorite holiday foods if you keep your portions under control.
  2. Get up and get moving: Don’t just sit around feeling stuffed after a big meal. Gather up the family and go for a walk. Not only will you burn calories, you’ll get a break from being around all that food.
  3. Count your hors d'oeuvres: It’s easy to nibble endlessly on party appetizers and lose track of how much you are actually eating. Set a limit and stick to it. One way to keep count of the amount you eat is to stash a toothpick in your pocket for each one.
  4. Curb your appetite: Try to avoid arriving hungry to the party by eating a small healthy meal beforehand or have a nutritious pre-party snack. If you don’t show up with a big appetite you’ll have better control over what you eat and you’ll be less tempted to overindulge.
  5. Limit your alcohol: When you drink a lot of alcohol at holiday parties you aren’t just consuming extra empty calories, you’ll also be more likely to overindulge in food. Instead of another glass of wine or sugary cocktail, sip on a club soda or sparkling water.
  6. Create a diversion: Food is often the main event at a holiday party. Try to keep your mind on aspects of the party other than the food. Instead enjoy conversations with friends and family or find a dance partner and turn up the music.
