The Importance of Staying Hydrated

In your line of work, it's important to remain as cognitively sharp as possible as your brains process all kinds of stimuli while making crucial assessments, adjustments, and decisions. As a result, police work can be physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausting.

Luckily, there are many things you can do to get yourself in a better position to perform at a high level during your shifts. Exercise, getting enough sleep, eating as healthfully as possible and tactical training are all ways. But there is one thing that can easily be done to improve performance and that is to always hydrate properly.

Tips for staying hydrated:

  1. Choose water as your primary beverage!
  2. Aim for 64-100 oz per day. Increased activity, sweating and hot temperatures increase these needs.
  3. Every 15 minutes of exercise = An intake of 4-6 oz water
  4. Use a high-quality drink or drink mix (like MyHy) that includes carbohydrates and electrolytes after physical activity lasting longer than 60 minutes or exposure to extreme temperatures.

Examples of electrolytes include calcium chloride, magnesium, phosphate, potassium, and often most importantly sodium. Electrolytes are needed to maintain an even balance for your body to function properly.
