Planned Giving

Leave a lasting legacy

Giving Hand
In this section

A planned gift allows you to make a meaningful charitable gift now, or in the future, that meets your philanthropic goals while also benefitting your personal, family, and tax considerations. Through your care and commitment, you can help ensure Baton Rouge General has a secure and prosperous future and continues to remain locally owned and independent in order to meet the medical needs of our community.

Gift Options Include:

Gifts You Make Today

Stocks and Other Securities

Giving appreciated assets like stocks can make your charitable dollars go further as they are investments that have increased in value from the time they were purchased. By taking advantage of certain IRS tax incentives, you may be able to claim charitable tax deduction for the full, fair market value of the securities, and pay no capital gains tax on the transfer.

Retirement Assets

Designate the Baton Rouge General Foundation as beneficiary of a Retirement plan or IRA account. If you are age70 ½ or older, you can transfer funds directly from your IRA to Baton Rouge General Foundation by Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). This type of gift typically avoids additional income tax and counts toward your annual required minimum distribution.

Real Estate

A gift of real estate is a time-honored way of making a substantial gift that is usually highly appreciated. You can receive an income tax deduction equal to the appraised fair market value of the property, with no capital gains tax due on the transfer to the Foundation.

Gifts That Impact Your Future

Charitable Remainder Trusts

If you establish a trust for yourself or other beneficiaries, each will receive payments for life and/or a number of years. At the end of the term, the remainder of the trust assets go to the Baton Rouge General Foundation for the purposes that you designate. This gift also has potential income tax deduction and estate tax savings.

Charitable Gift Annuities

In exchange for an outright gift, the Baton Rouge General Foundation or trustee agrees, by contract, to pay a fixed amount each year to you and/or another beneficiary for life. A portion of the gift is tax deductible.

Gifts You Make After Your Lifetime

Life Insurance

If you have a life insurance policy that you no longer need because of a change in your life circumstances, you can give a paid- up policy or even a policy on which you are still paying premiums, to the Baton Rouge General Foundation. We can be included as a beneficiary, contingency beneficiary, or owner of a new or existing policy. It is a great way to make a large gift at little cost to you. Sample language: "X percent to my heirs (list names) and X percent to Baton Rouge General Foundation, Tax ID # 74-0801335"

Bequest

A bequest is a gift from your estate- a transfer of cash, securities, or other property made through your estate plans. You can leave a specific amount, a percentage, all, or a portion of what is left in your estate after you have fulfilled other bequests to your family. Sample language: "I give to Baton Rouge General Foundation, Tax ID # 74-0801335 all (or stated percentage) of the rest, residue and reminder of my estate..."

Donor-Advised Funds

You can direct the remaining balance in your donor-advised fund to support the Baton Rouge General Foundation. Simply designate us to receive all or a portion of the balance of your existing fund through your fund administrator.

Gift You Make Now And In The Future

Blended Gifts

A blended gift combines a cash gift today along with a gift in the future. It’s an ideal option for donors who want to see the impact of their gift during their lifetime while also extending their impact for years to come.

Planning your donation takes careful consideration. The suggestions listed illustrate some of the ways to accomplish charitable giving under current tax regulations. When you begin planning, you should consult an attorney, certified public accountant or other tax professional.

Baton Rouge General is fortunate to have dedicated benefactors supporting its mission, including many who have chosen to secure its future through planned gifts. These generous visionaries have turned their compassion into action.
